Basketball Scoring and Screen Door Game

Scoring in Basketball

In regular basketball games:

  • A field goal is worth:

    • 2 points inside the three-point line

    • 3 points from behind the three-point line

  • A free throw is worth:

    • 1 point

The team with the most points at the end wins the game.

For younger players, especially in beginner programs like YMCA Rookies, coaches may use modified scoring systems to encourage skill development. For example:

  • Teams may earn points for:

    • Keeping possession

    • Making good passes

    • Setting effective screens

    • Teamwork and movement

This helps children focus on learning basketball fundamentals instead of only trying to score baskets.

Setting Screens Game – “Screen Door”

Goal

To teach players how to:

  • Set effective screens

  • Free teammates from defenders

  • Use teamwork and timing

Game Setup

  • Play 3 vs 2

  • Offensive players must make 3 passes before setting a screen.

How the Game Works

  1. The ball handler stands at the top with the basketball.

  2. One offensive player sets a screen (pick) for the teammate.

  3. The teammate cuts around the screen and gets open for a pass.

  4. The ball handler passes to the open teammate for a shot.

Communication Calls

The ball handler can call:

  • “PR” = Pick Right

  • “PL” = Pick Left

Players can also move naturally without calls.

Scoring System

  • 2 points for a successful screen
(when the screener frees the teammate from the defender)

  • 1 point for a basket scored directly from the screen action

After every shot:

  • Reset the play

  • Start again with a new possession

Each offense gets 5 possessions.

Make the Game Easier

  • Play 3 vs 1

  • Use a cold defense

    • Defenders move slowly

    • Passive defense

    • About half speed

Make the Game Harder

  • Play 3 vs 3

  • Use a hot defense

    • Defenders play aggressively

    • Full speed and active pressure
