Pick-and-Roll in Basketball

What is the Pick-and-Roll?

The pick-and-roll is one of the most famous and effective plays in basketball.

The name comes from two actions:

  1. Pick (Screen) → A player sets a screen for a teammate with the ball.

  2. Roll → After setting the screen, the screener moves (rolls) toward the basket to receive a pass.

This play creates:

  • Open shots

  • Driving lanes

  • Layup opportunities

  • Defensive confusion

Basic Pick-and-Roll Sequence

Step 1 — Set the Pick

A teammate stands still and sets a legal screen for the ball handler.

Step 2 — Dribble Around the Screen

The ball handler dribbles tightly around the screen.

Possible outcomes:

  • Open jump shot

  • Drive to the basket

  • Defender switch confusion

Step 3 — Screener Rolls to the Basket

After contact with the screen:

  • The screener turns and cuts toward the basket.

  • The screener raises the lead hand as a target.

Step 4 — Pass for the Layup

The dribbler passes to the rolling screener for an easy basket.

Important Detail

The dribbler should take:

At least two dribbles beyond the screen

Why?

  • Creates passing angle

  • Forces defenders to commit

  • Opens space for the roller

Common Errors and Corrections

Error 1 — Moving Too Early

Problem

The dribbler uses the screen before it is fully set.

Result:

  • Illegal moving screen foul

Correction

  • Wait until the screener is completely still.

  • Read the defender first.

Error 2 — No Target Hand

Problem

The screener rolls without showing hands.

Result:

  • Difficult pass

  • Missed scoring chance

Correction

  • Raise the lead hand while rolling.

  • Give the passer a clear target.

Pick-and-Roll Game — “Pickin’ for Points”

Goal

Score using the pick-and-roll.

Game Setup

  • Play 3 vs 2

  • Offense must complete 3 passes before starting the pick-and-roll.

How the Drill Works

  1. Ball handler starts at the top.

  2. Teammate sets a screen.

  3. Ball handler dribbles around the pick.

  4. Screener rolls to the basket with hand up.

  5. Ball handler passes for a shot.

All shots must come from:

A pick-and-roll action.

Scoring System

  • 2 points for every successful pick-and-roll basket

Each offense gets:

  • 5 possessions

After every shot:

  • Reset the play

  • Continue again

Then teams switch roles.

Easier Version

  • Play 3 vs 1

  • Use cold defense

    • Passive

    • Half speed

Harder Version

  • Play 3 vs 3

  • Use hot defense

    • Full-speed aggressive defense

Basketball IQ Insight

The pick-and-roll forces defenders to make difficult decisions:

  • Stay with ball handler?

  • Switch defenders?

  • Help on roller?

  • Protect basket?

One small screen can disrupt the entire defense.

Simple Analogy

Imagine one friend briefly blocking a hallway so another friend can run past. After creating space, the blocker quickly runs toward the destination to receive the object back. That is the pick-and-roll concept.

Core Principle

The pick-and-roll succeeds because:

One player creates space, and the other attacks the opening before the defense can recover.
